Saint Petersburg is Russia's second biggest city after Moscow with over 4 million residents, and Europe's biggest city after Istanbul, London and Moscow. St. Petersburg is a major European cultural centre, and an important Russian seaport on the Baltic Sea. It warmly welcomes thousands of visitors annually. Having been Russia's cultural and political centre for 2 centuries, the city is sometimes called in Russia the Northern Capital. For centuries, it has also been referred to as 'the Venice of the North'. A lot of foreign consulates, international companies, financial institutions and other businesses are located in St. Petersburg. Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city of canals and rivers is on a boat. Over 70 rivers and canals make their way through the whole city, with approximately 400 bridges crossing them. The unique view of the 'Venice of the North' is created by the looming silhouettes of the bridges, the grandeur of the waterways, the granite embankments with their piers and slipways, the 18th and 19th century palaces and parks on the banks of the Neva and the canals, domes and spires of churches and cathedrals, visible from a long distance away. You can also enjoy the view the city in an automobile, accompanied by a qualified guide. You will see St. Petersburg most noted tourist attractions - St. Isaac's Cathedral, Palace Square, the Peter & Paul Fort and the Cathedral - where Romanovs' dynasty was buried. Every tourist to the city should go on an excursion to the Hermitage Museum. Today, the Hermitage has around 2.7 million exhibits and displays a full selection of world art from Ancient Egypt to early 20th century Europe. It contains masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, unique collections of Rubens, Rembrandt, French Impressionists. The collection is huge and well worth seeing. It has been estimated that if you spend a minute in front of each museum exhibit, you will have to stay in the Hermitage museum for 11 years, but on the guided tour you have the chance to see all the greatest masterpieces of art in a few hours, being guided by a professional guide.
