FASHION is an art that reflects life. From time to time we hear the names of Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Giorgio Armani etc. There designers have a great impact upon our hair styles, how we dress up, the way we put on make-up and even our habits. Every season designers determine our choices of clothing. A fashion calendar includes several very significant events known as fashion weeks. Fashion weeks are held each season for fashion houses to demonstrate their latest collections in runway shows and for buyers to view the latest fashions. Most importantly, they display the fashion industry what is in and what is out for the season. The most prominent fashion weeks are held in the fashion capitals, including Milan, London, New York and Paris where luxury clothes (differently called haute couture) are demonstrated. Haute Couture is a French term for expensive and fashionable clothes intended for ladies. Couture stands for dressmaking, sewing, or needlework and haute denotes sophisticated. Haute couture items are made for a specific customer from high-quality, expensive fabrics and sewn by hand normally using time-consuming techniques. Thus, couture items are luxurious and exclusive. Dependent on the haute couture fashion house and the garment, the cost of a couture item runs from $10, 000 for a blouse to $40, 000 and normally beyond that amount. The price includes payments for the service, work, originality of an exclusive design and splendid fabrics of the highest quality. In addition, every customer will receive a garment to fit them perfectly. It takes about 100-150 hours to produce a handmade couture suit and up to 1000 hours for an evening dress adorned with thousands of beads sewed by hand. A fashion house like Chanel, for instance, will have approximately 150 regular clients ordering couture clothes, and a couture house like Dior will make about twenty couture wedding dresses annually. Alongside clothes, renowned couture houses make luxury accessories, such as hats, buttons, belts, jewellery, footwear, handbags. Those who can afford couture items, pay for exclusivity and the privacy guaranteed by the system. |
